About the team

The current commoditisation of AI has huge potential benefits for content production. As such the brand new AI team we are building at Veed will be responsible for researching and developing features building upon these technologies. This is a new space for us too and our initial focus will be on the integration of existing systems rather than building our own AI models. However, this may change over time as the team grows. We are looking for someone who can bring plenty to the table, and grow the product. To get you started, we have some ideas as well!

This team is growing out of our Rendering team and currently has one dedicated senior engineer, with a short-term plan to grow to 3 engineers.

Of course, you will also have plenty of support from other teams, whether it is cloud infrastructure, rendering, frontend or backend, because we know that developing such features can sometimes touch the whole stack. You will have the opportunity to influence how these features are built and also to grow the team.

What You'll Do

As a Staff Software engineer you will act as an engineering multiplier for the entire division you will serve. You will be a Group Engineering Manager's technical partner and the ultimate responsible person when it comes to the technical work being carried out by a division. The Staff Engineer for AI will have a strong emphasis on cross-team collaboration, setting technical direction, coaching and supporting teams across Veed to integrate AI tools.

You will be responsible for the technical output of your teams both in terms of code quality as well as creating monitoring, handling and resolving alerts. You will contribute to building a culture of responsibility and accountability.

You will work closely with the CTO, Architects, Group Engineering Managers and Engineering Managers in supporting the rest of the Engineering Team. You will not have any line management responsibilities.

Core responsibilities of the Staff Engineer:

• Advocate for improvements to product quality, security, and performance that have particular impact across your division and others.

• Solve technical problems of the highest scope and complexity for your team.

• Provide mentorship for all Engineers on your team to help them grow in their technical responsibilities and remove blockers.

• Exert significant influence on the overall vision and long-range goals of your team.

• Shepherd the definition and improvement of our internal standards for style, maintainability, and best practices for a high-scale web environment. Maintain and advocate for these standards through code review.

• Drive innovation on the team with a willingness to experiment and to boldly confront problems of immense complexity and scope.

• Proactively seek out difficult impediments to our efficiency as a team (“technical debt”), propose and implement solutions that will enable the entire team to iterate faster.

• Represent VEED and its values in public communication around broad initiatives, specific projects, and community contributions. Interact with customers and other external stakeholders as a consultant and spokesperson for the work of your team.

• Consistently ship large features and improvements with minimal guidance and support from other team members. Collaborate with the team on larger projects.

• Participate in Incident Management.

About You

We are looking for an experienced AI Staff Software Engineer to join our fully remote team. We would love to hear from you, if you have:

• Extensive technical background.

• Strong experience in machine learning and deep learning frameworks such as Tensorflow, PyTorch, and OpenCV.

• Experience deploying AI solutions at production scale in a cloud environment.

• Software development and prototyping using Python, C++ and TypeScript.

• Keen awareness of both the code and the environment in which it operates - how is it hosted, deployed, is it working as intended, is it documented and load tested?

• Successful track record of mentoring and upskilling software engineers.

• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills. You partner with members across the larger organization, communicate vision and purpose, drive clarity and spearhead project initiatives.

• Effective communication skills and the ability to influence both technical individual contributors as well as business partners.
